More than 200 residents joined Grassroots Adviser Er. Dr. Lee Bee Wah for April’s litter picking event at Yishun Zone C Blk 813 Multi-Purpose Hall on 22nd April 2017. The principal, teachers and 30 prefects from Peiying Primary School joined us in this year’s Earth Day Celebrations. Apart from the usual litter picking, Nee Soon South residents also learnt how to recycle systematically. The aim was to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment. Students from Peiying Primary School’s ECO Science Club showcased their handicrafts made of recycled materials. Residents participated in a Terrarium workshop where they learnt the basics of a terrarium and how to create a self-sustaining environment for the pet inside, as well as the importance of water in our ecological system, emphasizing the relationship between life and Mother Nature.
SAY NO to Plastic Bags
International humanitarian NGO Tzu Chi Foundation were invited to share with residents on the growing concerns of increased pollution and the importance of the 4R’s, ‘Refuse and say “No” to Plastic Bags’, ‘Reduce on waste’, ‘Reuse when appropriate’ and ‘Recycle as a lifestyle’. Thereafter, Er. Dr. Lee Bee Wah launched the Recyclable Bags collection points, an initiative to discourage residents from using plastic bags and adopt recyclable bags instead. The key point of this movement is to encourage residents to deposit any extra recyclable bags in boxes placed at the respective RCs within Nee Soon South. It will help to cultivate the habit of sharing recyclable bags as well as educate those who are not actively practicing this habit.
