Dear Residents of Nee Soon South,
MOBILE LIBRARY (nicknamed MOLLY)
In the early 60s, Mobile Library Services were started to address the overwhelming demand for library services. In fact there were only three libraries at that time, including the then main library at Stamford Road.
As Singapore's population continued to grow and more people were resettling in satellite towns, the government decided to build more public libraries in the heartlands. Our nearest public library was Yishun Community Library, located at Yishun Centre. I received many requests during my house-to-house visits for a library in Nee Soon South. In response to your requests, I sought the support of the National Library Board to set up a mini library for children at the Nee Soon South CC. It was a first step to get the library closer to our residents.
In April this year, NLB announced the launch of a new mobile library service, affectionately known as "MOLLY". Taking the form of a single deck SBS bus and equipped with a wide selection of books, transaction kiosks and book returning service, it brought library services to the heartlands. Its aim is to help the community to benefit from and discover the joy of reading.
I then contacted NLB and requested for MOLLY to come to Nee Soon South CC. It came to fruition and during the CC Open House on 24 June 2008, Senior Minister of State (Information, Communication & the Arts), Mr Lui Tuck Yew officially launched MOLLY in Nee Soon South. I am proud to tell you that our CC is the first to provide MOLLY services. From Saturday, 6 September MOLLY will be visiting Nee Soon South CC on every Saturday from 12noon to 2pm. More importantly, MOLLY will enhance the love and joy for those who thirst for literacy and knowledge.
